By the 1988 U.S. Presidental Election, Criag Nutt had made nearly 50 of his Flying Vegetable whirligigs. One day while working in the studio and listening to the radio, Nutt heard candidate (then) Vice-President George H. W. Bush say, "I will never use food as a weapon." The next day, Nutt started on a series of 8 Vegetable Bombs.

Influenced by the civilian and military rocket industries of Huntsville, Alabama in the 1960's, this piece draws from the space exploration world while recalling familiar imagery from his native Iowa.  Nutt has said that the similarities between the military and agribusiness became clear after returning from a family trip after a long absence from Iowa.
